I’ve heard the first year can be the hardest for a newly married couple. Even though I’m new to the married life (only 3 months in), I could see why that first year is one to celebrate. The first year is all about learning each other and growing together. I did a little research on the subject and wanted to share some of my favorite ideas for creating an unforgettable first anniversary celebration.

Recreate your first date. I love, love, LOVE this idea. If you can remember your first date, then you’re golden. If not, I recommend one of the ideas below. Try recreating your first date with that extra something – bring along the top of your cake (if you have it) or bring your wedding album along to reminisce. You could even have your parents drive you if your first date was before the age of 16. No matter what the first date location, find it, plan it and fall in love all over again!

Renew your vows. I’ve heard of a lot of couples renewing their vows after 15 years, 25 years or even 50 year. However, the 1 year vow renewal seems to be a growing trend. Now what about this extra twist…VEGAS!!! Grab a few friends, or even go alone, and hit up one of those little white chapels in Vegas to renew your vows in style – maybe even Priscilla Presley and Elvis style? I think it sounds like a blast and why not, Vegas is a party town, a perfect setting to celebrate your first anniversary.

Paper Party! For those of you who aren’t necessarily interested in celebrating your first paper anniversary alone, PartyPop had a great idea that would be a blast to put together. Throw a paper party where you and your husband/wife dress up completely in paper. We’re talking a gown and suit made entirely of paper! When guests arrive, require them to make a piece of attire for themselves out of paper as well. I think it adds a little something extra to thet traditional party, plus a lot of laughs.

Stay Home. This one is probably more my style. If you’re not the Vegas type and you want to spend some time alone, you could always try staying HOME! If you have kids, send them to your parents. If you have a dog, send him to doggy camp. Order in or pick up food, buy a bottle of champaigne, light the fireplace and enjoy each other. You don’t always have to go out to have a great time, and you don’t have to get too bogged down in the hype of a first anniversary.

If you’re already passed your first year, congratulations! If you just got married, good luck! And if it’s coming up, well, I hope you find these ideas helpful. Remmeber the first anniversary is about celebrating your love and life together. If you don’t want to be traditional, don’t be! Think outside the box.
